Bill Campbell dedicated his life to serving his country. His career spanned decades of various jobs in different agencies. He started with the national guard and moved on to become a biologist for the State Department of Fish and Wildlife. He then re-enlisted in the Army to help in the peace efforts in Iraq.
There, he had the responsibility of managing the security at a forward operating base. And during the course of his service, he has experienced being attacked several times. Those attacks led to him suffering two concussions and shrapnel injuries to his head and hand,
As a result of those injuries and the development of PTSD and memory loss, the army classified him as 100 percent disabled and he retired.
Pax
Because of his condition, Bill developed a crippling fear of being around crowds. He would sometimes spend days inside his home, refusing to venture out. And if he does, he would get stressed and anxious. Sometimes, he would even hyperventilate.
His solution was to get a service dog.
Bill applied for one and because of his classification, he soon met Pax.
The sweet and gentle labrador completely turned Bill’s life around. His presence helped him overcome his fears and pushed him to go out more often. His attention is focused on the dog and this leaves little space for anxiety.
Bill was so thankful to have Pax in his life that he decided to pay a visit to the woman who trained him and made the changes in his life possible.
The visit
Bill and his service dog went to Bedford Hills Correctional Facility, north of New York City. This was where Pax was trained by an inmate named Laurie Kellogg. She, along with 26 other women, was part of a program that trains service dogs for veterans.
The moment that Pax saw her old trainer, he immediately dashed towards her. Laurie also ran towards her old friend. The two had a very emotional reunion like no other. They hugged for a long time and the dog kissed her all over repeatedly.
Bill gave them their moment, And afterward, he came up to Laurie to express his gratitude. That day ended with everyone happy and their hearts full of love.
