When we adopt dogs, most of us usually take care of them until they pass away. Dogs don’t live quite as long as humans do and as heartbreaking as it may be, we have to accept that their death is a part of life. However, the love that our dogs give us will always last a lifetime through memories and our dogs deserve a family who will never abandon them even when they get old and frail.
Unfortunately, some dog owners don’t value the love that their dogs give and when their dogs get old, they don’t want to deal with the cost of taking care of them. Like all creatures, dogs also get old and they will experience a variety of health problems. Some develop age-related diseases, which can prove quite costly to treat. Because of this, people end up dumping senior dogs in animal shelters.
Thankfully, there are plenty of kindhearted people out there who would do everything to give these dogs the dignity and love that they deserve for the remainder of their lives. A woman named Nicola Coyle was a nurse and also works in a dog rescue organization. When Nicola retired in nursing, she had more time for the dogs and realized that she can do better for the senior dogs that were abandoned in a dog pound. Nicola wanted to give dogs that have months to live a life that they deserve.
So, Nicola decided to take in senior dogs from the dog pound and give them the love and care that they deserve until the day they pass away. At first, Nicola would have a maximum of three senior dogs at a time. If the dogs were well enough, Nicola would take the dogs out on adventures, such as going to the beach and treat them to fish and chips or a nice steak dinner.
Nicola would spend around 500 pounds or close to 700 dollars per dog and she takes it out from her own pocket. However, people started noticing Nicola’s good deed for these dogs and started donating to help Nicola continue her work. Nicola eventually founded the Grey Muzzle Canine Hospice. This is where old and dying dogs get to live out the rest of their lives in comfort and love. For many of the dogs, it’s the first time that they’ve experienced such a loving environment.
It’s emotionally demanding work and Nicola would always grieve for every dog that she cares for passes away. However, despite all the heartbreak that Nicola experiences when caring for these dogs, she continues to do her work to make sure that the dogs feel loved and that they die with dignity. Here’s an amazing video featuring an amazing woman who gives love and comfort to the senior dogs that are on the final days of their lives.
