Since they were puppies, we try to teach our dogs a lot of things. It’s important to let them know how to follow commands to help them become more well-behaved. But for these doggos, they often love it because of the treats they get after.
So Paul Goldan, a fur parent, thought that it would be nice to teach his Golden Retriever, Quincy, something really special. His doggo not only goes and picks up a ball but also newspapers! And this smart doggo has been doing this for the past 11 years for his whole neighborhood.
The idea first came to Paul when he realized that dogs are so smart because you can basically teach them anything. He knew that Quincy could pick up the paper in the same way he fetches a ball and gets treats as a reward.
Paul first trained Quincy to pick up their newspaper every morning and the pooch did it happily every day. So when the doggo got the hang of it, Paul decided to take it to another level. He started taking Quincy out for a walk in their neighborhood and trained her to pick up their neighbors’ newspapers as well.
Quincy would excitedly bite down the paper and bring it to people’s doors. Everybody knows the doggo and what she does for them so they aren’t surprised when there are some bite marks on their paper. They even love it whenever they get to see the helpful doggo.
It took Quincy months of training to deliver newspapers to people’s porches. But now, she has mastered it and has always been recognized for her service to their community. There is no doubt that this doggo deserves lots of treats!
Paul says that people often underestimate the intelligence of a dog. But he believes that our pets can do a lot more as long as we know how to teach them right and reward them. There is nothing that these dogs couldn’t do with the perfect amount of love and support that we give them.
