Having pets can bring happiness to our lives. Some may think that the more furry friends they get, the happier they become. While that is true sometimes, the joy they feel with lots of fur friends around them may not be reciprocated by the animals, especially if they do not look after them.
People who adopt several pets but fail to provide for them and have no regard for their environment are animal hoarders. These people have no right to adopt a pet. And at times, these people get away with such abuse because their victims suffer quietly.
On November 13, 2020, Tonie Quinlin came across the home of an animal hoarder. Tonie first saw a pup hanging out a window of the house in front of hers. The dog somehow broke the boards supporting the windows and let himself known to anyone who would help him.
Tonie immediately called animal control after seeing that the pup looked poorly nourished and was filthy. While waiting for animal control to arrive, Tonie was shocked to see the pup jump down the window. Tonie ran over with a leash and comforted the poor pup.
When the cops came to take the black Retriever mix away, they found out that five more pups were in that house. It was all thanks to the one-year-old pup that his companions were saved and could start their lives anew. They named the black pup Hero because of his bravery to escape abuse.
It took a while for Hero to heal physically from his scars. The officials brought him to Paws and Claws Adoption Center to help the pup with his condition. Deb Potter, the center’s director, said that every pup, especially pups like Hero, deserves a second chance in life in a loving family. So she is trying her best to make sure Hero gets what he deserves.
Soon, more and more people became interested in the brave pup; one of them is Melissa Ripley, an officer in Lincoln Police. She helped Hero enter a program called Second Chance Pups. In this program, pups are partnered with inmates to help each other. Dogs in this program improve their association skills and have a better chance at adoption, while the inmates give back to the community.
Carrie Herrera, another woman who got to know about Hero, lost her husband last year and could definitely use a little more love in her life. Melissa and Carrie are good friends, so Carrie texted Melissa and told her that she wanted to adopt Hero. Melissa was overjoyed and immediately set up a date.
As soon as they met, Carrie knew that Hero is perfect for her. Now, Hero only needs to finish his obedience training before moving into his new home with Carrie. If you know of any animal hoarding cases, please report to your local animal services or authorities. Your quick response to such abuse could be the start of a new life for many animals like Hero.
