Last January 20, Joe Biden was officially sworn in as the 46th president of the United States. But 3 days before his inauguration, his German Shepherd named Major stole the spotlight with his virtual indoguration as the first-ever shelter dog to live in the White House. Joe Biden adopted Major in 2018 with the help of the Delaware Humane Association (DHA).
Back in March 2018, a woman dropped off a litter of puppies at the shelter letting them know that she couldn’t care for them. They were only a few weeks old then and Major was one of them. Stephanie from the DHA quickly made a post about these puppies and somehow Biden’s daughter saw the post and she immediately told her dad about it.
Biden contacted the shelter telling them that he was interested in one of the puppies. According to Stephanie, the puppies were too young to stay in the shelter and so they went straight to foster homes and Major went to the Bidens. After 8 months, Major can be finally officially adopted and Biden called in to say that he was coming in.
Everybody was excited to see Major again. But more than that, they were happy that Joe Biden decided to adopt a shelter dog. As an American politician, that decision made a big impact and encouraged people to adopt instead of shop dogs. Biden also posted pictures of Major in December 2018 officially welcoming him into the Biden family.
The excitement even grew bigger when Biden won the Presidential Elections last year because that meant that Major would be the first shelter dogs to roam the West Wing. But he won’t be alone as he would be able to enjoy the place with his brother Champ, the Biden family dog who is also a German Shepherd.
Major and Champ have been recently removed from the White House due to a biting incident but they’re back as the President confirmed. They’re undergoing training and getting settled back again.
