One evening five years back, a much-unexpected customer visited Gerardo Ortiz’s restaurant, Ajilalo, somewhere in Peru. Ortiz could have just turned the pup away, but he never did. That evening, he gave the pup a free meal, made only for her.
And then started a sweet tradition that continues up to this day.
Every evening, from that moment, the hungry pup came and got free food from Ortiz’s restaurant. However, it didn’t take so long for word of Ortiz’s generosity and kindness to disseminate around the community of local stray dogs. More pups started to come with that first-ever visitor – and Ortiz showed hospitality to them all with food.
These days, many stray pups visit the doors of Ortiz’s restaurant every evening. A lot are regular “customers,” while some are first-timers – in hopes of filling their tummies, thanks to Ortiz’s kindness.
Usually, while he is working, he will look up and find a new pup’s face right at the front – politely waiting to see if such rumor that free meal could be found there is true. And it always is.
According to Ortiz, for him, these dogs are his best customers. His human customers also hardly take it as a slight. Inspired by him, they usually bring meals for the visiting pups, too. He said that, thankfully, their customers have reacted very well to the pups. They’re also affectionate toward them.
Ultimately, his routine of giving food to all the stray pups that visit his restaurant more than keeps them from being hungry. It does let them know that each of them matters – a truth which Ortiz is glad to prove to them every single day.
He said that these dogs don’t pay them with money. But they pay them with their wagging tails and happiness. They’re so grateful, and Ortiz’s restaurant enjoys giving more than receiving.
He added that ever since he was a child, he has loved animals. His mom always taught them to help others, may it be people or animals. She’s his inspiration.
