During a typical day of operations in the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS), a donator unloading free supplies spotted a creature in the parking lot. It was a frail dog resting on the ground.
The donator immediately notified the staff inside, prompting them to bring the dog in for emergency care. Eventually, the gentle giant gained the name, Ethan.
The recent incident wasn’t quite new to the shelter staff but they admitted that Ethan’s case was one of the worst things they’ve seen so far. In fact, he was too skinny and sickly that he must have gone without food or water for many weeks.
It’s also unclear if his previous owner purposely inflicted that kind of suffering or if he didn’t mean for it to happen. Whatever reason it may be, it is still so saddening to see how neglected he was. Truth is, Ethan weighs 38 pounds when his healthy weight should have been 90 pounds. How could a human do this?
Despite Ethan’s unknown dark past, he fought hard for his life. In return, the shelter staff also held on to that little percentage of survival.
Soon enough, Ethan gained weight and recovered from his past illnesses. He also became the life of the shelter, making him loved and famous not only in the institution but also on social media.
It wasn’t long until one of the staff felt a special connection to the gentle giant. They spent time together when Jeff Callaway, the staff, used to take care of Ethan during some nights at the shelter and later on fostered him in his home.
During those times they’ve spent together, Jeff observed how Ethan was just the right fit in his heart and in his home. Not long after, he realized he had to make it official. His wife and 5 kids were also in agreement when asked about their thoughts.
Upon hearing the good news, the rest of the staff at the shelter were ecstatic about what Ethan has become that they organized an adoption celebration for him. We are all relieved that our gentle giant has finally found his forever home. Continue striving, Ethan!
Thanks to Ethan and Kentucky Humane Society for the photos.
