UNC Baseball Team’s Service Dog Does More Than Just Pick Up Baseball Bats

UNC Baseball Team’s Service Dog Does More Than Just Pick Up Baseball Bats

Dohou April 6, 2021

One of the main and top reasons why we love our doggos so much is the fact that they pretty much can do anything we ask them to. Although there are certain limitations, it’s still mind-blowing how these fur babies are able to learn how to perform certain tasks on cue.

In this story, we will be talking about a very good boy, who pretty much does everything for his team, and when we say that he belongs to a team, we meant that literally. This is the story of Remington. This golden good boy is being hailed as the very first service dog in the United States that belongs to a team.

Although doggos making appearances on baseball games to fetch the bats is quite common, Remington’s role is pretty unique. It’s not like any other because the doggo pretty much does a lot of things for the game and the team. Remington belongs to the University of North Carolina Men’s Baseball Team.

Before each game, Remington is tasked to bring a bucket of balls for the umpires to use, and from time to time, the pupper brings cold bottles of water for the officials to cool off. Remington is so well-behaved that he even lines up with the team during the singing of the national anthem.

Whenever a player becomes injured, the pooch takes on a psychological and emotional role. The team’s Head Athletic Trainer, Terri Jo Rucinski, explained that Remington is always there for his brothers to help them recover. One of the players said in an interview that the pup’s presence helps him relax and focus on getting better every day.

Terri Jo even claimed that having Remington around helped the student-athletes improve their grades. Is there anything that this doggo cannot do? Speaking of things Remington can do, the pooch knows a lot of tricks, and sometimes, he seems to be able to read the cue cards being shown to him. Remington is just a super doggo and the UNC Baseball Team is lucky to have him.
